Measure your hard drive speed (kind of)

Of course there are actual benchmark tests / software to test hard drive speeds, but here are some ways to get an idea of what you’re working with.. when comparing to other machines.

Let’s compare my home workstation compared to the linuxos.pro server.. we’ll do two tests; dd and hdparm

Using dd to test:

Using hdparm:

So let’s go!

dd:
Home main drive:
134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 0.552237 s, 243 MB/s

Home USB sata:
134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 5.01892 s, 26.7 MB/s

Server:
134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 0.547235 s, 245 MB/s

hdparm:
Home main drive:
Timing buffered disk reads: 708 MB in 3.01 seconds = 235.58 MB/sec

Home USB sata:
Timing buffered disk reads: 106 MB in 3.05 seconds = 34.73 MB/sec

Server:
Timing buffered disk reads: 702 MB in 3.00 seconds = 233.97 MB/sec

They’re both pretty close (except for that sata drive attached via USB).. what did you come up with?
